Introduction

The idea…

It is my goal to design and build a single-seat composite aircraft inspired by the FW-190D9. It is not meant to be a direct scaled copy of a D9, but rather an inspired small/fun little fighter to fly around my hometown of Kansas City in.

I started the design process after finishing my capstone project completing a Master’s degree in aeronautical science. For my capstone, I designed a UAV. In doing this I discovered XFLR5. Using XFLR5 and coupled with Fusion 360, and Microsoft excel I started to tinker around with some designs. I have been strongly influenced by Mike Arnold and Burt Rutan, therefore, deciding to go with composite construction.

This is a blog covering my design and build process of what I have called the “Sf-1” for Soehlig Flugzeugwerke - 1. The name was inspired by Bayerische Flugzeugwerke of course. Below are some pictures of my progress and attached is my working excel document.
